中国旅美科技协会犹他分会举行第四届年度理事会 刘丽萍
中国旅游美科技协会犹他分会于2002年8月10日在盐湖城龙城中餐馆举行年度第四届理事会。本次理事会的中心议题是欢送旅美科技协会犹他分会会长董希泉博士，选举产生新的会长、副会长及秘书长，并就各位历史的职责实行进一步的明确分工。
与会的理事会成员代表旅美科技协会犹他分会的全体会员向董希泉博士赠送了犹他州风光图册，并在风光图册上签名留念，以对他在任旅美科技协会犹他分会会长期间的出色服务表示衷心感谢，并祝福他在新的工作岗位上事业顺畅、生活美满。
本次理事会以无记名投票方式选举产生了新的旅美科技协会犹他分会会长、副会长及秘书长，他们是：朱昊会长、程维丽副会长、万乐秘书长。理事会成员一致认同，在今后的工作中，大家一定不遗余力，协助新的领导班子把旅美科技协会犹他分会办得更红火。
按照旅美科技协会犹他分会章程，与会代表一致通过增补理事会两名新的成员：夏卫东、张哲。每一位理事会成员对新的分工表示赞成，并表示对旅美科技协会犹他分会的进一步壮大与发展充满信心。理事会具体分工如下：

亲爱的华人社区朋友，请您闭目片刻，试想在我们盐湖城地区西谷市即将建成的多元文化村。它包括我们东方式的商业、餐饮、文化展览、剧场等。而在文化村南端的主要入口，将竖立一座二十尺宽的中国式宏伟门楼。它将为我们传达我们民族文化的气息，这会是一个您与家人常来游玩和休息的场所，也是您带领远方来客参观和留连的去处。
这个东方式的公园每天会迎送来自各地的嘉宾，而置身其中，会让我们感到对遥远的东方故乡的亲近。当您向您的孩子和远方来的朋友介绍这个中国传统门楼的建造故事，您可能会骄傲地告诉他们：“这是我们社区朋友合力而建的，这里面也有我的一份贡献。”
这座有着纪念意义的建筑物将标志着我们独特而值得骄傲的文化、传统、习俗，也代表着这个国家对于多元文化的重视。无论我们来自何方，我们的种族和文化背景不会改变，我们的子女也需要用以建立他们的自尊与自信。在不久前盐湖城一个颁奖晚宴中，CoralWang将军有一段感人的演讲，其中她说：“我很骄傲能成为美国军队中的第一位女将军，同时也很骄傲中国人为美国创造了这一历史。”这表现出中国文化和种族背景使她感到的光荣和骄傲。
好些年来，我们时常听到有关在盐湖城建立中国城或文化村的议论。大家热切地期盼着一位有能力、有远见和奉献精神的热心人来带领大家实现这一梦想。终于，西谷市的陈有义警官站了出来，为这一规划的实施做出了极大的努力，使这一梦想有了实现的可能。在两个月前一次有关规划的会议中，陈警官一次就将自己的整月薪水捐献了出来。目前这项工程在资金方面还是非常困难，完全要依靠我们社区每一位成员的慷慨解囊。这是一项非常有意义的工程，对华人社区来说是一件扬威尽善、造福子孙的好事。在此恳请您的帮助。请记住捐助不分大小，我们每一位朋友的一砖一瓦、一点一滴将建筑起我们的民族式门楼。感谢您的参与、您的贡献！如蒙捐赠，请将支票寄到下列地址：

CAST-TX
RESTRUCTURING
The Chinese Association for Science and Technology in Texas (CAST-TX) was established in 1999 under the guidance and help of then-CAST-USA President Zhou Mengchu’s administration. In 1999, $300 membership fee was mailed to CAST-USA headquarters from CAST-TX. The first annual meeting of CAST-TX was held in Dallas, TX in December 1999 and elected Zou Yousuo as the President, Cai Qian as the Secretary and Wu Zheng as the Treasurer. After the continuous effort, CAST-TX established the Houston Division in 2001 and expanded the original Austin Division, and now is setting up the San Antonio Division. Through the preparation and expansion from 1999-2002, CAST-TX currently has nearly 200 members with divisions in Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio.
After several months’discussion, recommendation and nomination on BOD membership by the CAST-TX advisors and members, an election has been conducted by CAST-TX members during September 1-September 15, 2002 based on CAST-TX’s bylaw. The elected BOD members of CAST-TX have had a meeting at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in the afternoon of September 21, Saturday 2002. 新会员榜
旅美科协犹他分会最近发展了不少新会员，本刊将陆续介绍。这一期先介绍魏慧英副教授和李喜青先生。
Huiying Wei
Huiying Wei is a tenured associate professor of sociology in Weber State University. She is specialized in teaching organization studies and sociological theories and statistics. Her research interests are in Asian Americans, current social phenomena in China, and some topics about the Cultural Revolution in China.
Huiying Wei came to Utah from New York in 1995 after she received her Ph.D degree in sociology in 1994 from State University of New York at Stony Brook. Prior to this degree, she also received two master degrees, one in linguistics, and the other in sociology. She lived in Long Island, New York for ten years.
Huiying Wei was born in Beijing, and grow up in Xinjiang, went to Sichuan Foreign Language Institute majoring in English Language and Literature in the spring of 1978, and was hired by her own university as a college lecturer in 1881. She was a lecturer in the Department for Students Going Abroad, mainly training the students in reading and writing before they go to English speaking countries. She lived in Chongqing for eight years, then in 1985, she came to the United States to continue her higher education. Like many Chinese scholars, she never returned back to her teaching position in China, instead, became a college professor in this country.
Xiqing Li
Xiqing Li was born in Changshu, Jiangsu province in 1971. He got his B.S. in chemistry at University of Science and Technology of China in 1994 and studies at National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory for his M.S. at the same university.
After graduation in 1997, Xiqing worked for two and half years for a green field paper mill project with a total investment of 600 million USD, first as a technical translator and then as an assistant commissioning coordinator for the power and water treatment plant ultimately turned his interest from science to engineering.
Prior to his arrival to Salt Lake City, Xiqing served as a sales and service engineer for Citivigor Limited for one year. Citivigor Limited provides specialty chemicals and paper machine parts made in Europe for the paper and pulp industry in China. This short experience allowed him to witness the severe pollution of paper and pulp mills and motivated him to work for the environment protection in China as his long term objective. As a result, he is doing research on colloid and bacterial transport in groundwater for his Ph.D in environmental engineering at University of Utah, while making efforts to introduce environmental products from North America into China.
Xiqing values the CAST-UT as a great platform for the Chinese here to help and work with each other to create4 a brighter future. He believes that working as a team makes tremendous differences than individually and Chinese people do need to be better organized. He is convinced that CAST-UT can play a pivotal role in uniting the local Chinese as well as in establishing links with governments and various organizations in China. It is his pleasure to serve the local Chinese community through CAST-UT.
书摘 蒙古族物理学家萨本栋 云 天
李汶忠编著、科学出版社1998年出版的《中国蒙古族科学技术史简编》详细介绍了中国现代著名的蒙古族物理学家和教育学家萨本栋，现择要摘录如下：
萨本栋（1902－1949）教授为中国物理学和教育事业作出了重要贡
献。
萨本栋出生于福州市，蒙古族人。是元代著名诗人萨都剌之弟萨天
19代孙，自元代由山西雁门南迁福州后遂成福建巨族，萨本栋的父亲曾在
日本留学，并追随孙中山先生的革命活动。
萨本栋1921年毕业于北京清华学校，1922年赴美国史丹福大小攻读机械专业，1924年得学士学位后转至麻省吴斯得工学院，两年后获博士学位。1927年被美国西屋公司聘为工程师。
1928 年，萨本栋回国任清华大学物理学教授，当时他才26岁。1925－1936年是中国物理学初期发展阶段，学术界成立了中国物理学会，以后每年召开年会，交流研究心得，讨论物理学问题，订正物理学名词，出版专门杂志。
1932年8月22日至24日，中国物理学会在清华大学举行成立大会暨第一次年会，选举李书华为会长，萨本栋为会计和当然评议员。同年，萨本栋编纂的《物理学名词汇》由中华文化教育基金会出版。
1933年8月，在上海交通大学举行的中国物理学会第二次年会上，萨本栋又与李书华、叶企孙、严济慈等学者被选为1933至1935年物理学会负责人。
1935年，萨本栋所著《普通物理实验》由商务印书馆出版发行。同年，萨本栋应邀到美国俄亥俄州立大学电机工程学系讲学，内容是他在国内从事多年研究的用双矢量方法解决电路问题，博得了美国电机工程学界的赞赏。
1936年8月17至21日，中国物理学会和中国科学社、中国数学会等七个科学团体联合召开年会。萨本栋被推选为这届物理学会秘书长。
1937年，著名华侨领袖陈嘉庚先生创办的厦门大学改为国立大学，35岁的萨本栋被任命位首任校长，并担任此职达八年之久。抗日战争爆发后，厦门大学迁往福建西部山城长汀县，被誉为“抗战期间东南最佳大学”。萨本栋先生要求学生关心中华民族的命运，树立抗战必胜的信心。
1939年，萨本栋用英文编著的《双矢量电路分析》在美国出版。该书立即被选为《国际电工丛书》，并获中国电机工程师学会第一次荣誉奖章。
1942年，萨本栋又被选为物理学会领导人之一。
1944 年，萨本栋所著《实用微积分》由青年图书出版社出版。同年5月，萨本栋应美国国务院邀请，到美国麻省理工学院、史丹福大学等校讲学近一年，主讲交流电机及其原理，1945年回国途中，复应英国政府和学术团体之请，在英国讲学。
1945年，萨本栋任中央研究院总干事。
抗战胜利后，萨本栋于1946年2月赴联合国参加原子弹研究。他在美国某所大学讲演原子弹问题时，听众竞达数万人之多。同年冬，中央研究院物理研究所决定从上海迁往南京，他任该所代理所长。也在同一年，他在美国用英文出版了《交流电机》，该书被美国加州理工学院、卡内基理工学院等十几所大学采用作教本。
由于积劳成疾，萨本栋的胃癌已到晚期。1948年他赴美国加州理工学院附属医院接受治疗，但医治无效，于1949年1月31日与世长辞，享年仅47岁。临终时，他留下遗嘱，要求死后将遗体解剖化验，供医学界研究癌症之用，美国公众十分钦佩他的这种精神。
萨本栋先生的一生是短暂但又富有意义的，他为国家和民族的教育、研究事业鞠
躬尽瘁，为后人树立了光辉的典范。
